Glossary of Latin, Italian and English terms

Roman Personal Names

To find and view a property in ancient Pompeii.

Pompeii is divided into Regions or Regio, each of which contains a number of Insula (blocks of houses and shops bounded by a road on each side). There are nine Regio each numbered in Roman numerals from I to IX. Each Insula has its individual door entrances numbered. Our web site has a picture of every doorway and detail of the insides of most.

The web site is designed to be simple to use through a system of plans which start with the plan of Pompeii above which will lead you to a Regio of your choice and then to an Insula and then to the pictures for your selected property.  If the property has a name you can use the Names Index link on the left hand bar.

To locate a precise property e.g. VIII.2.1

Click on Region VIII on the above plan or the link, this will take you to the next plan where you can click on Insula 2 and then finally click house number 1 which will bring you to the photographs for VIII.2.1. You can also use the buttons on the left of every page to get back to this plan (Click on Home) or to go to plans for altars, fountains, etc. You can also use the Help button.

Thanks

Our grateful thanks to all who have helped us in this project, especially Pier Giovanni Guzzo and Antonio D'Ambrosio, Soprintendenza Speciale per i Beni Archeologici di Napoli e Pompei, for the necessary permits to visit the site and for permission to publish this web site. We would also like to thank the many Custodians who have taken us around and made good use of their bunches of keys.

This project would not have been possible without the personal help of Andrew Wallace-Hadrill and Maria Pia Malvezzi. To them we give our special thanks.

Special thanks are given to Mattia Buondonno for the many enjoyable hours spent with him, his friendship and his willingness to assist and help on many occasions during our visits.

A special thanks also to Raffaele Prisciandaro for his friendship, local knowledge, and the copy of his book “Studio sulle provenienze degli oggetti rinvenuti negli scavi borbonici del regno di Napoli. A very interesting and valued book.

Thanks also to Michael Binns for his interest in our site and his input and help; to Rick Bauer for being our man in Pompeii, our thanks for his many photographs new and old, and his willingness to explore the site and help us document and photograph the city; and to Ralf Einhorn for letting us use his late father’s photographs of Pompeii taken in the 1970’s.

Ringraziamenti
