According to Warscher,
quoting Mau in Bull. Inst 1875,
p.27,
“Per lasciar entrare i
carri il marciapiede è interrotto avanti alla porta, e il selciato della strada
continuato fino all’ingresso che è largo come quelli delle botteghe ed era
chiuso mediante una porta a due partiti. La porta però non si fermava come al
solito: nel bel mezzo della soglia di lava vi sono gli avanzi d’un uncino di
ferro, e più a sinistra la buca per un chiavistello solo, mentre l’altro partito
ne stava senza. Invece al di fuori
della porta si trovano nella soglia quattro buche quadrangolari, due vicine ai
cardini, le altre m.0,20 discoste da quelle”.

(translation:“For
the carts to enter, the pavement was interrupted in front of the doorway, and
the paved roadway continued up to the entrance that was as wide as the doorway
of the shops and was closed by means of a door with two entries. The door,
however, didn't close as usual: in the middle of the lava threshold there were
remains of an iron hook, and more to the left the hole for a latch only, whereas
the other entry was without one. Instead outside the door in the threshold were
four rectangular holes, two near to the hinges, the others 0, 20m distant from
those.")
