Fiorelli said he thought it was a workshop with extra rooms, altered from its ancient design by the work directed by Domenico Fontana on the Sarno canal.

According to Warcher,

“This was a workshop with other rooms, altered from the ancient configuration by the route of the Sarno canal built by Fontana:

here one can see the remains of wash-tubs and furnaces that existed here before”.
