V.3.7 Pompeii. March 2009. West wall of garden area. Aedicula
lararium.
Niche with upper and lower zones.
The marks can be seen of the partition that separated the
upper and lower zones.
Also visible are the marks of a second partition that
apparently formed the floor of the niche.
See Boyce G. K.,
1937. Corpus of the Lararia of Pompeii. Rome: MAAR 14. (112, p. 38, Pl 36, 2).

V.3.7
This has a painting of a serpent advancing left to a
round altar which is painted in a variegated marble style.
In the background are plants and a double garland is
across the top.
See Boyce G. K.,
1937. Corpus of the Lararia of Pompeii. Rome: MAAR 14. (112, p. 38, Pl 36, 2).

V.3.7
The red plaster was painted with an aedicula façade
within which stood the painted figure of Ceres.
She was wearing a crown of ears of grain and held a torch
in her left hand and a sheaf of grain in her right.
Boyce contrasts the
delicacy of this painting with the coarser and more familiar lararium art
above.
See Boyce G. K.,
1937. Corpus of the Lararia of Pompeii. Rome: MAAR 14. (112, p. 38, Pl 36, 2).

V.3.7

North side of aedicula lararium and second niche nearby.

V.3.7
Second small niche on west wall, north of aedicula lararium.
The niche had a projecting slab for the ceiling and
another for the floor.
A second floor within the niche covered the slab giving
the appearance of a raised step within the niche.
The floor was painted in imitation of red and yellow
marble.
The wall below the niche was covered with a painted
garden decoration.
See Boyce G. K.,
1937. Corpus of the Lararia of Pompeii. Rome: MAAR 14. (112, p. 38, Pl 36, 2).
