V.4.b
According to Boyce,
within the niche and on the surrounding wall was the Lararium painting, on a
background of yellow.
On the back wall of
the niche the Genius poured a libation upon a cylindrical altar, on the
opposite side of which stood the tibicen.
On the wall on either
side of the niche was a Lar. The one on the right held a rhyton and situla.
The one on the left
held a rhyton and a cup, like a skyphos.
On the left side wall
of the niche was the popa leading a hog.
Below the level of
the niche on the left side was Mercury, with petasos, caduceus and purse.
These three figures
on the left side were painted on the column of the peristyle which was
partially built into the west wall of the kitchen.
Immediately below the
niche, a crested serpent (two serpents according to Sogliano in the Not.Scavi, one according to Mau in the Rom.Mitt) glides among plants.
The surface of this
painting had been covered over in antiquity with a thin coat of plaster, as if
to make it ready for repainting.
