north side.

VI.1.10
According to Jashemski, the garden in the north-east
corner at the rear of the house was excavated in 1770-71.
It had a portico on part of its west side, supported by
two limestone pillars.
The room to the south
had a large window which gave a view into the garden.

Mau identified the
room at the rear, to the right of garden, with window opening onto the garden as
the only room with paintings of interest.
They were -
a man sitting with a
writing tablet in his hand, opposite him were 2 girls, one sitting, the other
standing; the latter held a roll of papyrus, p.281,
In the same room,
another panel, which was transferred to Naples Museum -
a young woman was
represented as painting a herm of Dionysus; a cupid was holding the unfinished
picture while she mixed colours on her palette.
Two other maidens were
watching the artist with unfeigned interest, etc, p.282, figure 133,
The room contained a
third picture, which is now almost obliterated.
